Tesla has led the automotive landscape by pushing it towards electric vehicles. As additional vehicles are sold, so must the charging infrastructure. Depending on where you live, the build-out of chargers may be well underway, sparse, or somewhere in between. Several businesses and organizations have stepped up to participate. Some have installed Tesla destination chargers, while others have chosen the standard J1772 level 2 connector.
Businesses who want to cater to a wider group of drivers may prefer the J1772 knowing that many Tesla owners have an adapter that allows them to use that connector. In some locations where an inadequate amount of chargers exist, etiquette is cast aside. These three rules should be followed.
Only park in an EV spot if you are charging
Don’t charge beyond 80% if others are waiting, and
Don’t pull out a charging cable from a plugged-in vehicle
Regarding the last point, there is a possible issue with the Tesla adapter for the J1772 cable when plugged into your vehicle. Someone can pull out the J1772 from the adapter. The adapter would still be in the Tesla, but the charging cable is free. We found a simple, inexpensive device on Etsy from CntrlAltPrints, which locks the J1772 cable to your Tesla adapter. This ensures that charging etiquette rule #3 does not happen to you! Check out our video review of this product here:
